HTHW (High Temperature Hot Water) Line Replacement Phase II

This project involves replacing aging high temperature hot water lines at various locations around campus. Please note that East Drive is scheduled to be closed May 27 through June 9 during Phase C.

PROJECT MAP

  • Phase A (red line on map)- Phase A involves installing a high temp line from the Fine Arts Building, through parking lot A. UPDATE: Restoration of Parking Lot A is scheduled to begin May 19 and be complete June 6. All fences and barriers installed for phase A will be removed.
  • Phase B (light blue line on map)- This phase entails installing HTHW piping behind the Administration Building to East Drive. UPDATE: Some phase B work is already underway. Around May 21, the parking lot directly behind the Administration Building will be closed so excavation can take place and new pipe installed. Phase B work is scheduled to be complete and the lot behind the Administration Building re-opened and fences removed July 3.
  • Phase C (dark blue line on map)- HTHW pipe will be installed across East Drive.  Work will begin May 19 following Commencement and be complete June 25. 

**UPDATE: East Drive near the Administration Building will be closed May 27 until June 9. Traffic will be detoured during this portion of the work. Signs will indicate the detours.**

  • Phase D (green line on map)- From Science I to manhole #7A. UPDATE: Work will begin May 19 when temporary fences and barriers are installed in the area. Excavation will take place from May 27 through May 30. This area will be backfilled June 17.
  • Phase E (purple line on map)- HTHW pipe will be installed from manhole #7A to the Fine Arts Building. UPDATE: Excavation on this phase will begin June 16 and be complete June 20. Pipe will be installed and the area will be backfilled July 11.
  • Phase D&E restoration work with includes reinstalling a retaining wall, light poles and other site restoration will occur from July 14 to July 31. Phases D & E will be complete July 31. Please note the project will be dormant during the Empire Games.
  • Phase F (yellow line on map)- A HTHW line will be installed adjacent to the pedestrian path that runs from the Science Library, past the Greenhouse and to Science III. Work will begin July 28 and be complete October 14. This phase involves various sections of pipe so excavation and back filling will occur in phases as project progresses with the work starting near the Science Library, progressing past the Greenhouse and then to Science III. The last section will be backfilled September 8 and site restoration will begin then as well. Work will be complete October 14. Note that the circle in front of the Anderson Center if affected by this project. Parking lot C will remain open.
  • Phase G (gold line on map)- Phase G involves installation of a HTHW line for the East Campus Housing project. The line runs along East Drive, past the Dickinson Community, parking lot U, parking lot R and to the East Campus Housing site. The installation will take place in phases starting near the East Campus Housing site. UPDATE: Initial work including marking the site and installing fencing will begin May 12. The first excavation will begin on May 19. The project will be complete August 31.

University Union Renovation Phase 1

This project will begin after Commencement in May 2008. In the week after Commencement, furniture and other items still remaining in building will be moved to storage. Fencing and staging areas will be established. The first part of the project involves asbestos abatement. This is scheduled to begin May 27. The asbestos removal will continue through the summer and renovations will follow beginning late fall, 2008.

Spaces being renovated include UU 133, the Mandela Room, Old Union Hall, several meeting rooms, lounges, the Tillman Lobby and the floors above and below those spaces. Work includes new ceilings, lighting, finishes, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, new power distribution, sprinklers and smoke detectors. A skylight will be installed in the Tillman Lobby, a new waiting area enclosure will be constructed for bus users and a number of multi-purpose rooms will be created as a result of the project. The renovations are scheduled to be complete in August, 2009. 

University Union Roof Replacement

The roof over a portion of the south half of the University Union will  be replaced in summer 2008. The work will begin following Commencement and take about two months to complete.

Engineering Building Critical Maintenance

Beginning Monday, May 19, a floor removal/asbestos abatement project will begin in the Engineering Building. The project will affect a number of areas at different times over the summer. Some areas will not be accessible for short periods of time. Building maps indicating work areas have been posted in the departments. Signage will also be used to get people around work areas. The scope of work includes removal of asbestos containing floor tiles along with ceiling, lighting, flooring and door replacements. General upgrades to corridors, classrooms and other spaces is also part of the project.

Susquehanna Community Gas Main

A gas main will be installed in the Susquehanna Community so that hot water heaters can use natural gas instead of electricity to help improve efficiency. Work will begin May 19 and be complete this summer.

East Campus Housing (ECH)- Building 1

This rendering shows the front of the new buildingConstruction of the first building to replace Newing College is underway. The contractor has installed a temporary road from lot S 5 to to Broome and Bingham to maintain emergency and service vehicle access. Erosion control measures are in place. Excavation is complete and work on the foundation and utlilties is underway.

Work hours on the site are 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. Trucks and other construction vehicles will access the site via Center Drive and East Drive.

Some parking changes have been implemented due to the project and more detail and maps regarding the changes can be found here.

The building will house 341 students. This floor plan shows the layout of floors 2 through 5. The first floor including a great room, laundry facilities and Residential Life offices can be seen in this floor plan. Building features include:

  • Concrete and steel building with brick veneer
  • 116,255 square feet
  • The first building will house the heating plant and storage space for the entire future Newing and Dickinson complexes on the ground floor .
  • There are three building wings joined at 90 degree angles
  • The first floor will house residential life offices, apartments for the Resident Director and Assistant Director, janitorial space as well as resident rooms
  • The second through fifth floors includes resident rooms, bathrooms, lounges and study rooms 
  • Building is protected with an automatic sprinkler system
  • Landscaping, including recreational outdoor facilities, are part of the project
  • LEED green building standards will be used in construction.

The completion date for the first building is August 2009.

Memorial Courtyard

The contractor has begun additional renovations in the Memorial Courtyard. Work includes installing new walkways and landscaping.

HTHW (High Temperature Hot Water) Line Replacement Phase I

This project began last year and involved replacement of HTHW pipe in the Science I/II courtyard. The remaining piece of the project involves installing HTHW piping in the area of the Physical Facilities compound.  Work began March 17th in the area in front of the garage. Traffic in the compound is restricted in the work area. Work is expected to be complete around the second week in June.

Electrical Distribution Upgrade Phase 1

A new electrical duct bank system will be installed from the switch yard in the Physical Facilities compound and along West Drive from the Academic Complex to Science III/IV. The work will involve digging a trench and installing a duct bank which will house new electrical cables.

Old electrical cables will be replaced and the project will  help feed new buildings such as Science V and East Campus Housing. The project will also help the campus better balance electrical loads, provide redundancy to the electrical infrastructure and  allow for easier maintenance of the system.

The project is scheduled to start in late July and be complete in December.

Water Softener Installation

A small building will be constructed next to the Pump House on the perimeter of parking lot E to house new water softening equipment.  It will house three tanks and storage space for rock salt which is used in the water softening process. The project is now underway and will be complete in November.

Newman Pedestrian Bridge Renovation

The pedestrian bridge linking the campus to the Newman House will be renovated in summer 2008. Work is expected to start in June  and be complete in August. The bridge will be closed during that time but pedestrians may cross the creek using the bridge to the Innovative Technologies Complex.

Library Tower Refurbishments Phase 2

Offices on floors 6-9 will be refurbished. The work includes cleaning fin tubes (heating elements), caulking windows, painting, floor cleaning an installing new furniture.

 

Bunn Hill Entrance Sign

Work is underway to install a message board at the Bunn Hill campus entrance. The message board that will be put in place is similar to the one installed at the main campus entrance.

Susquehanna Community Kitchen/Bath Renovations

The kitchens and baths in Nanticoke and Choconut will be renovated in summer 2008.  New cabinets, countertops, sinks, ceiling lights, tub surrounds, lavatories, toilets and flooring are included. The construction will start after Commencement and be complete by the time students return in August. This project is similar to the renovations that took place last summer in Brandywine and Glenwood.

Residential Hall Fire Alarm Upgrades

Fire alarm systems will be enhanced in all buildings in the Hillside Community except Rockland and Saratoga and also in Mountainview's Hunter and Marcy Halls. The work will start following Commencement and be complete before students return in August.

CIW-Seneca Abatement/Renovations

Materials containing asbestos will be removed. New ceilings, flooring, carpeting and energy efficient lighting will be installed. New furniture is also part of the project. The work will take place following Commencement and be complete when students return.
