This procedure outlines the proper handling of bats captured on the Binghamton
University campus.
For residential areas:
A bat found in a residence MUST be held if a bat was
in the room with or found next to:
- An unattended young child
- A sleeping individual
- A person under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- A person with sensory or mental impairment
|
- In this case, the bat should be containerized by
the pest control contractor and placed in the refrigerator located at
CSC or ECSC. CSC or ECSC will notify EH&S at 7-2211 that a bat has been
captured and possible exposure has occurred. EH&S will contact the
Broome County Health Department at the earliest possible time but no
later than the next business day.
A bat found in a
residence MAY be released if none of the criteria above have been met and there
is no risk of employee contact with the bat during removal.
For non-residential areas:
- A bat found in a non-residential area MAY be released
if no one has been exposed to the bat and there is no risk of employee
contact with the bat during removal.
- A bat found in a non-residential area MUST be held if
a person(s) has been exposed to the bat. Exposure is defined as a bite,
scratch, saliva contact to the eyes/mouth/nose/open wound, or any physical
contact with the bat. Capture of the bat must be performed by the pest
control contractor. The containerized bat will then be placed in the
refrigerator located at CSC or ECSC. CSC or ECSC will notify EH&S at 7-2211
that a bat has been captured and possible exposure has occurred. EH&S will
contact the Broome County Health Department at the earliest possible time
but no later than the next business day
- FOR ALL AREAS, if there is any question as to
whether or not exposure has occurred, the bat should be captured by the pest
control contractor. The containerized bat will then be placed in the
refrigerator located at CSC or ECSC. CSC or ECSC will notify EH&S at 7-2211
that a bat has been captured and possible exposure has occurred. EH&S will
contact the Broome County Health Department at the earliest possible time
but no later than the next business day.
- Anyone who believes they have been exposed to a bat
should seek guidance from EH&S at 7-2211 or the Broome County Department of
Health at 778-3924.
